Is Nessie a Loch Ness Cryptid? The cryptozoology angle

Nessie poses a continuing problem for science. In cryptozoology she is referred to as a cryptid; a creature that is thought to exist but which has not so far been proven beyond reasonable doubt. Certainly, it’s not possible to state that the Loch Ness Monster is in fact a plesiosaur or a seal, salmon, eel or sturgeon but the abundance of eye witness evidence must lead to the conclusion that something is in the water and we just haven’t found it yet.

Bearing in mind that Loch Ness contains more fresh water than all of the lakes in England and Wales put together and is so deep that it would comfortably drown London’s Telecom Tower (formerly the Post Office Tower) then you can picture why we are finding it so hard to get conclusive proof. But the search continues and the truth is out there!

Monster sized hydro electric plant set to re-start in 2011

Europe’s largest hydro electric project opened last year and then closed abrubtly as the massive underground tunnel carrying water down from an elevated loch to Loch Ness was blocked by a massive rockfall. Now, after much re-building it is set to re-start next year but will Nessie be happy as it raises and lowers the water level and creates noise and vibration. It’s situated near Fort Augustus and all we can do is hope that it doesn’t cause harm or annoyance to our elusive crytozoological resident or to anyone else around the area.

Loch Ness Lay-By Closed but potholes should be priority

A key viewing point on the A82 by Loch Ness has been closed off by Scotland Transerv (the guys and gals who sometimes slap the odd blob of Tarmac on our battered and bruised highways). The lay-by is sinking into the loch and its retaining wall is also badly damaged. A Highland MSP (member of the Scottish Parliament) has called for it to be fixed in time for the tourist season so that Loch Ness Monster hunters can use it to spot Nessie. But, frankly, the entire A82 road between Inverness and Drumnadrochit is in a dangerous state with terrible deep potholes and these should be fixed first.

Don’t worry if you are visiting the area; Loch Ness has lots of other lay-bys on both the north and south sides and you can also spot her from your home via our Loch Ness Live Cams

Hadrian’s Wall Lit By Flaming Torches

Yes, as Scotland drew against England 15-15 in the rugby at Murrayfield and Nessie the Loch Ness Monster stayed submerged due to light rain showers in the Scottish Highlands, Hadrian’s Wall was lit by hundreds of flaming torches carried by volunteers.

Official history says this landmark, visible from space, was built by the English to keep out the barbarians from Scotland but we believe it was actually the other way round.

Monster hydro electric scheme planned for Loch Ness

News is just coming in of a proposed monster-sized 600mW hydro electric installation at Loch Ness. It would be the largest in Scotland and one of the largest in Europe.

Offering no more than one or two full-time local jobs (running these things is all done remotely) it is being planned by SSE Scottish and Southern Energy – the company that appears to care nothing for Scotland’s picturesque landscape.

Just take a look at what they are building between Beauly and Denny: over 100 miles of giant sized pylons that will completely blight some of our most beautiful areas. The plant at Foyers and the broken one at Fort Augustus also produce noise pollution and are in every way unsuitable for this wonderful place.

There are many reasons to oppose this development and we will be following it very closely. It surely promises to finally ruin Loch Ness as a beauty spot and environmentally sensitive area – and for nothing but corporate greed.

Robert Rines – Loch Ness Monster Hunter dies

So, R.I.P. Robert Rines, who invented lots of gadgets and hunted for the Loch Ness Monster, Nessie. He lived in Boston USA and some of his “photos” of Nessie are very controversial.

Monster sized £1 million Loch Ness harbour proposal

Local residents learned this week that a cruiser company is planning to develop land on the north side of Loch Ness into a million pound harbour complex.

Located at Brackla, the scheme will provide parking and services for punters wishing to take a cruise to various places around the loch including Urquhart Castle and Fort Augustus. There are serious concerns about traffic entering and leaving the new site from the dangerous high speed A82 carriageway (which is in shocking condition and already recognised as one of the most deadly roads in Scotland). Indeed, several people have recently died near to the proposed development.

On the plus side the scheme promises jobs and the developers have pledged to hold public meetings to seek local views and feelings about the best way to proceed. They have also said that expensive solutions such as a pedestrian underpass will be considered to enhance visitor and staff safety and the amenity of the site.

It’s early days with no firm planning application yet lodged at Highland Council and we don’t know what Nessie, the Loch Ness Monster, or local residents and businesses think about this new venture – but it will be interesting to see how things proceed.

Yes, we’re back! After a summer of various problems including a thunderstorm that temporarily knocked out a lot of our livecam equipment, we are delighted to say that the main panoramic cam is back in action and the enhanced Urquhart Castle cams and interactive cam is ready to be installed.

Big things are happening at Loch Ness and I’m writing up more about those as you read this.

The Loch Ness Monster mourns Steve Irwin

She never met him but it was always on the cards and here at Nessie on the Net we have been working towards it. But it was not to be and today the world lost a leading light as Steve was cruelly taken from us by a freak accident:https://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/asia-pacific/5313078.stm

Nessie is devastated and could not be contacted for comment. She is said to be sick and tired of the boring mediocrity that came to look for her in the 60s and 70s and the old bearded non-entities that still hang around her haunts like a bad smell. She was hoping for so much more but, sadly, young talent has been cut away by cruel fate.

Loch Ness Monster to get £3 million extravaganza

Nessie the Loch Ness Monster is all set to get a new £3 million centre at Lochend (on the Inverness end of Loch Ness). “It is our intention that it will rival if not surpass the House of Bruar and Brodie Country Fare in excellence,” said Ms Freda Rapson (managing director of Jacobite Cruises and Highland Business Woman of the Year).

Here at Nessie on the Net we have some serious concerns but will await a full planning application before deciding whether we support the scheme or will fight it tooth and nail…
